Transit in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area is at a crossroads. On the surface, fluctuating ridership and revenue has resulted from COVID lockdowns, work-from-home, auto-dependency, safety and equity issues. But there are also numerous capital and operational challenges that must be corrected: politics and governance, leadership and accountability, finance and procurement, maintenance and technology, human resources and customer service, land development and mobility management.
With the input of 24 speakers as well as 100 delegates representing government, business, unions, academia and NGOs, the GTHA Transit Summit agenda was designed to examine many economic, environmental and social benefits with historical, current and forward-looking perspectives. We are now combing through the resulting strategic recommendations so the future of Toronto transit is brighter than its recent past!
